Web Exercise #1: Breastfeeding Laws
LO 4.2: Discuss the role of feeding and nutrition in the growth of infants and toddlers.

Chapter 4 introduces students to the importance of breastfeeding. However, women may sometimes face challenges to breastfeeding.  Consider the following scenarios, view the websites provided, and answer the questions.
  1. Joyce is a new mother who breastfeeds.  She recently got a new job working as a custodian in a local middle school.  After working for three days, she complains to her supervisor that she feels rushed on her 15-minute breaks, does not have enough time to pump milk on her breaks, and feels uncomfortable that the only place available for her to pump is a bathroom stall. According to the law, what should her supervisor do?
  2. Lori gave birth to a little boy, Jonathan, 5 weeks ago.  She’s adjusting to life as a single mother and breastfeeding.  Her ex-boyfriend, Keith, just contacted her saying he wants custody of the baby and will be suing her for all rights.  What do you think the court will do? What is the law?

As infants’ and toddlers’ brains experience new neural connections, the children begin to reach new milestones in motor development.  Download the app My Baby Today. When you sign up, use the birthdate provided to your group.  Explore the app.
  1. What did you learn about your baby’s experiences, neural development, visual and auditory capacities, intermodal perception, and motor development milestones? Make connections between what you learn reading chapter 4 and what you learn exploring the app.
  2. Create a 10 slide Power Point to upload to your class’s Blackboard (or similar program) or to share with your class.  If you upload to Blackboard, view and respond to at least 3 of your classmates’ presentations.
  3. When viewing your classmates’ Power Point presentations, which age groups did you choose to read? Why? What did you learn?
