Personality in Midlife

Questions to Consider:

  1. Researchers find that personality influences a person’s life choices and experiences, while folk wisdom adheres to the opposite: that in adulthood, personality is influenced by events and experiences over a lifetime. Did the subjects of this video seem to believe personality influences choices, or that events influence personality? How can you tell?

Questions to Consider:

  1. What influences seem to shape whether these adults feel older or younger than their age?
  2. Why do you think researchers have found that midlife adults who subjectively view themselves as younger than their chronological age tend to score higher on measures of well-being and life satisfaction?

LO 16.7. Analyze family relationships in midlife, including the parent adult–child, grandparent, and midlife child–older adult parent relationship.

  1. Most midlife parents are happy in their roles, but satisfaction can vary based on characteristics of either the parent or the child. What characteristics do the two interviewees share about their children and about themselves that seem to shape the relationship they have with their children?
