Web Exercise #1: Interpreting Results of the Bayley-III

LO 8.1 Discuss the psychometric approach to intelligence, ways of measuring IQ, and the predictive value of IQ.

Chapter 8 introduces students to the Bayley-III intelligence test for infants. This test consists of gross motor and fine motor scales, a cognitive scale including items such as attending to a stimulus or searching for a hidden toy, a language scale examining comprehension and production of language, a social-emotional scale derived from a parent report regarding behaviors such as the infants’ responsiveness and play behaviors, and an adaptive behavior scale. An example of a child’s report after taking the test is provided here: http://images.pearsonclinical.com/images/dotcom/Bayley-III/ParentSASampleReport.pdf

  1. Does this child’s performance on each scale fall within the average range? Why or why not?
  2. The results give parents suggestions to help their child’s development. What are some of the suggestions given for each scale?
  3. Given what you know about cognitive development and language development, socioeconomic status, marital status, and so on, describe a hypothetical parent for this child. Provide additional sentences to support your reasoning.

Web Exercise #2: Flynn Effect

LO: 8.5 Discuss how giftedness, intellectual disability, and special needs are identified and healthy development promoted in such individuals.

Directions: This assignment can be done independently. Chapter 8 discusses the use of intelligence tests. Many schools use them to determine who gets accepted into gifted and talented programs or who may need special education services. One idea of intelligence discussed in your textbook is the Flynn effect. Each generation scores higher on intelligence tests than the one before it. Why does this happen? In this exercise, students will watch a TED talk given by James Flynn and answer the following questions.

https://www.ted.com/talks/james_flynn_why_our_iq_levels_are_higher_than_our_grandparents?language=en

  1. Are we getting smarter?
  2. What is causing the Flynn effect?
  3. Are these changes positive or negative? Discuss.
