Web Exercise #1: Child Protection Service Jobs

LO 5.1 Analyze health issues in childhood, including risks and protective factors for healthy development.

Directions: This assignment can be done independently. Chapter 8 introduces you to the effects of child maltreatment. The effects can be long-lasting; therefore, it is important that children experiencing abuse are protected. Some students may be taking this course because they have an interest in working at a child protection agency. In this exercise, you will explore the following questions: (1) What degree do you need to work for a child protection agency? (2) What are some of the job descriptions for people who work for child protection agencies? (3) How much money does someone who works for a child protection agency make? (4) Are jobs available in the field of child protection services?

Web Exercise #3: Alzheimer’s Disease

LO 5.4 Distinguish among common dementias, their risk factors, effects, and treatment.

Directions: This assignment may be completed independently. Chapter 5 introduces you to the topic of Alzheimer’s disease: its course, risks, and protective factors. Each year, more and more people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and women are more likely to acquire it than men. In this exercise, you will listen to a TED talk in which Alanna Shaikh discusses how she is preparing to get Alzheimer’s disease and another TED talk in which Samuel Cohen discusses how Alzheimer’s disease may be cured.

 

Web Exercise #4: Parkinson’s Disease

LO 5.4 Distinguish among common dementias, their risk factors, effects, and treatment.

Directions: This assignment may be completed individually. Parkinson’s disease is the most common cause of subcortical dementia. It is a brain disorder that occurs when neurons in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra die or become impaired. Motor symptoms occur first and include tremors, slowness of movement, difficulty initiating movement, rigidity, difficulty with balance, and a shuffling walk. Dementia then occurs. The purpose of this exercise is to explore a new treatment for Parkinson’s disease. In this TED talk, Andres Lozano discusses the use of deep brain stimulation to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, depression, and anorexia.
