Web Exercise #1: Increasing Physical Activity in College Students

LO 13.2 Summarize the physical developments of emerging and early adulthood.

Directions: This activity can be done individually or in small groups. According to your textbook, physical abilities that require body coordination and bursts of strength, such as sprinting and playing basketball, tend to peak in the early 20s whereas those that require endurance, such as distance running, peak in the early 30s. Students who attend college on campus may have many opportunities to participate in physical activities, but nontraditional students, those holding jobs or juggling families and college may not have the time to participate in physical activities or go to the gym. When one does not have the opportunity to participate in physical activities or go to the gym, there are many other ways to engage in physical activity. Read information provided on the following websites:

  1. Summarize the physical guidelines for Americans.
  2. What advice would you give to someone who says, “I don’t have time to work out”?
  3. Do you think you will implement any of these ideas in your daily life? Why or why not?

 

Web Exercise #2: Getting pregnant in your 30s

LO 13.2 Summarize the physical developments of emerging and early adulthood.

Directions: This activity can be done individually or in small groups. According to your textbook, many women are waiting until later in life to have babies. The purpose of this assignment is to explore the pros and cons of having a baby in your 30s. Read the information provided on the following websites and answer the following questions.

  1. What do you think? Should people who are over the age of 30 reconsider having biological children?
  2. If you were planning to have children in your 30s, what thoughts do you have after reading these web pages?
  3. What advice would you give to a couple who is thinking about having a baby in their 30s?

Directions: This exercise should be completed individually. Chapter 13 introduces students to postformal reasoning in early adulthood. The purpose of this exercise it to give students more information about postformal reasoning and help them understand how to apply this concept. Read information provided on the following websites and answer the questions below.

  1. How have these websites helped you better understand postformal reasoning?
  2. Provide two examples of postformal reasoning.
