Web Exercise #1:  Promoting Culturally Diverse Classrooms

  1. Visit the Diversity in Ed website at: http://www.diversityrecruitmentpartners.com 
  2. Click on the link at the top of the page titled “Career Center.”
  3. Select “Classroom Teachers” and view all the available topics.  A new webpage will open.
  4. Scroll down to “More Articles” and review the four articles related to rural, suburban, urban, and charter school communities. 
  5. Compare and contrast the “Pros” and “Cons” for each type of school community.
  6. Create a graphic organizer that displays these similarities and differences. 

Web Exercise #2:  Supporting LGBT Families

  1. Access “Opening Doors: Lesbian and Gay Parents and Schools” at:   http://www.familypride.org/publications/openingdoors.pdf.  It is a 31 page PDF document created by The Educational Advocacy Committee of the Family Pride Coalition.
  2. Read the document and answer the following questions:

    A. On page 15, there are several questions that educators are advised to ask parents.  Explain the significance of asking these questions.  Which questions do you feel you would have difficulty asking?  Explain why it may be difficult for you as a teacher to ask these questions.
    B. Starting on page 22, there is a listing of resources available for teachers and parents.  Which resources do you feel would be most beneficial to you as a teacher?  Why?
    C. List 5 of the rights and responsibilities of children, lesbian and gay parents, and educators, as included in the document, starting on page 17.  Do you foresee any of these affecting the cultural norms of the school in which you may teach?
    D. Describe the nonjudgmental way to answer children’s questions, as discussed in the document.
    E. Read the “Stories kids tell us about what happens at school” section, beginning on page 12, and write your personal response to those stories collectively.
