Web Exercise #1:  Professional Standards and Ethics

  1. Explore the 10 InTASC Standards for Teacher Candidates at: http://mrfluharty.iweb.bsu.edu/portfolio/styled/index.html
  2. Write a short summary of each standard in your own words and include examples of how you feel you can best show competency in each standard.
  3. Upon returning to class, engage in a Think/Pair/Share activity.  Share your interpretations of the standards and how you plan to show mastery of them.
  4. Next, explore the National Education Association’s (NEA) Code of Ethics for Teachers at:  http://www.nea.org/home/30442.htm
  5. Write a brief statement that shows you understand the professional ethics code by which teachers are expected to abide.
  6. Compare the principles of the Code of Ethics to what you see in the news about teacher behavior/misconduct.  Write a brief response as to why the media outlets choose not to cover the appropriate conduct of teachers, but instead spotlight the inappropriate conduct at any given opportunity.  Reflect on how this practice is damaging to the teaching profession.

Web Exercise #2:  Teacher Salary

  1. Educate yourself on what your expected annual teacher salary will be if you remain in your area to teach.
  2. Visit the Department of Education website for your state and every state sharing a border with your state.  Examine the salary schedule charts for those states.  Rank the average teacher salaries for those states (include a minimum of 3) and give reasons that may contribute to any discrepancies between the average salaries.  Consider signing bonuses, cost of housing/living, tax rates, and other factors.
