Web Exercise #1: Substance Abuse Among Youth
- Visit Above the Influence at: http://www.abovetheinfluence.com
- Click the “Know The Facts” tab.
- Select “Drug Facts.”
- Select at least 3 drugs/substances from the menu provided on the lower, right side of the screen.
- For each drug/substance, write a summary of the facts, long term effects, and “The Bottom Line” sections found on the website. Compile your information into one document. Then, write a final reflection paragraph about how you could use this website to teach your students about making healthy choices for their bodies.
Web Exercise #2: High School Dropouts
- Go to www.Google.com and search for images related to “high school dropouts.”
- Explore the variety of cartoons, photos, charts, and other graphics related to this topic.
- Using this broad cross section of visual media, what conclusions can you draw about the status and impact of high school dropouts in The United States?
- Discuss the role that teachers, at all grade levels, play in preventing dropouts. Reflect on ways that you can encourage your future students to remain in school.
