Web Exercise #1:  Substance Abuse Among Youth

  1. Visit Above the Influence at: http://www.abovetheinfluence.com
  2. Click the “Know The Facts” tab.
  3. Select “Drug Facts.”
  4. Select at least 3 drugs/substances from the menu provided on the lower, right side of the screen.
  5. For each drug/substance, write a summary of the facts, long term effects, and “The Bottom Line” sections found on the website.  Compile your information into one document.  Then, write a final reflection paragraph about how you could use this website to teach your students about making healthy choices for their bodies.           

Web Exercise #2:  High School Dropouts

  1. Go to www.Google.com and search for images related to “high school dropouts.”
  2. Explore the variety of cartoons, photos, charts, and other graphics related to this topic.
  3. Using this broad cross section of visual media, what conclusions can you draw about the status and impact of high school dropouts in The United States?
  4. Discuss the role that teachers, at all grade levels, play in preventing dropouts.  Reflect on ways that you can encourage your future students to remain in school.
