Discussion Questions

1. What concerns do you have right now as you begin your teacher preparation program? 

2. Who can you go to for the help you need and the questions you need answered in your preparation program?

3. What self-concerns or task-concerns do you have at this time? Do you think you will have these same concerns throughout your teacher education program? Why or why not?

4. How can teacher candidates and first year teachers show that they are striving for quality in their teaching? What evidence can be seen proving this quality?

5. Sometimes field experiences are completed with mentor teachers who are on the fringe of burnout in the education profession. You might observe some less-than-stellar strategies and practices in the field. How you can learn just as much from a bad example as a good example in your field work?

6. What types of questions do you need to be asking the mentor teachers you are placed with in those field experiences?

7. What requirements does your state have for licensure? How do you sign up and pay for those tests? Do you have a plan or timeline of when you will take those throughout your education program?

8. In terms of writing a resume, why is it important to keep it down to one or two pages in length?

9. When looking for a teaching position, why do you think it would be beneficial to apply to as many different schools as  possible, as opposed to putting all your eggs in one basket for one school and/or one grade level that has been your “dream teaching job” since you were a child?

10. What types of dispositions do you need to display in your field work and in your interviews for teaching jobs? What would be good to avoid during those interviews, in terms of attitudes and dispositions?

11. How is teacher leadership a significant part of every teaching position?
