Web Exercise #1:  A Critical Review of Teaching

  1. Click http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/07/20/why.quit.teacher/index.html to go to CNN’s Perry’s Principles Schooling for Success website.  There is a disheartening video about a teacher leaving the field.
  2. After you watched the video, answer the following questions:
  1. If 46% of teachers leave the profession before their 5th year, what will keep you in it?
  2. Paying your bills each month and not living in excessive debt is a worthy goal.  Will you be able to survive on the current teaching salary in the district where you have considered teaching?
  3. The teacher in the video cried when she thought about leaving her students.  She says they will pay the ultimate price in losing a good teacher, but she cannot afford to stay.  What would you say to her about that comment?
  4. The news commentator made a statement about teachers in foreign countries having only 3% of their teachers leave the field.  What factors may contribute to that fact?
  5. How satisfied do you estimate you will be in this job?

  2. Candace Davies poses 8 possible interview questions for teachers, as well as the answers that educators want to hear for those questions.  Read the questions and answers she provides.
  3. Then, take 3 questions that you feel would be the most challenging and answer them in your own words.  You are not expected to agree completely with Candace’s answers.
