Web Exercise #1:  Special Education Topics

  1. Visit the Council for Exceptional Children website at: http://www.cec.sped.org
  2. Click on the “Special Ed Topics” tab.
  3. Explore the variety of topics that are provided.  Many of these topics are also discussed in chapter 3.  Select one specific topic and conduct additional research in order to prepare a mini-report to share with your class.

Web Exercise #2:  MENSA Lesson Plans

  1. Review a lesson plan created for teaching students who are identified as gifted and talented by visiting the MENSA for Kids website at: http://mensaforkids.org
  2. Click on Parents/Teacher Resources link at the very bottom of the page.
  3. Click on “Lesson and Activity Plans.”
  4. Select “Lesson Plans.”
  5. Review any of the K-12 lesson plans on the site.
  6. Print out one lesson plan and critically review how the format, content, and style is different from a lesson plan that would be used to teach at-risk students or students with learning disabilities.  What accommodations could be made to the lesson plan to make it inclusive for all learners?  Add those accommodations to the plan and submit it as a general education lesson plan.  For reflection, write one paragraph about how having high expectations for all students can impact student learning.
