Learning Objectives

10-1: Describe the types of difficulties students with high-incidence disabilities may encounter in learning to read and write and accompanying strategies to facilitate student learning.

10-2: Define and describe the importance of mastering skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, text comprehension, handwriting, spelling, grammar, and text structure and composition. Provide examples of how to teach each.

10-3: Create scripted lesson plans to teach reading and writing concepts following the steps described for teacher-directed instruction.

10-4: Explain the role of culture and language in reading and writing and the implications culturally and/or linguistically for diverse students. Discuss how to teach reading and writing to students from diverse backgrounds.
