Discussion Questions

1.   The textbook discusses how Montessori schools produce students with superior academic and self-regulation developmental outcomes compared to students that attend academic training schools. Do you feel that a Montessori approach could be used at the college level? If yes, how would a course using the Montessori approach be structured? If no, why? Would you like to take such a course? Why or why not?

2.   This chapter explained some of the environmental factors related to academic success (teacher beliefs and stereotypes, teacher’s use of encouragement and praise, school climate, school size, and school resources). Thinking back to your K-12 school experiences, how would your schools rank on these environmental factors? Were there differences in these factors between your elementary school, middle school, and high school? How did these factors impact your academic success? Do you feel that these factors are applicable to the college level? Why or why not?

3.   Bullying is far too prevalent in our schools and workplaces. Unfortunately, bullying is now occurring in the virtual world of social media. The textbook stated that the victims of bullying in school are often from marginalized groups. Do you think this holds true in the virtual world? How do you think a bully picks a victim on social media? Do you think that virtual bullying can lead to the same problems for victims (e.g., mental health issues and school dropout) as face-to-face bullying? Why or why not?

4.   We have learned about mentoring in both chapters three and nine, and why it is important in both schools and in the community. Have you ever had a mentor? If yes, what positive outcomes did you experience as a result of being mentored? Are these outcomes similar to the ones discussed in the text? Have you ever mentored anyone? If yes, what did you do? How did your mentoring impact both your mentee and yourself?
