1. Diversity: http://breakingprejudice.org/teaching/group-activities/
Students should choose one of the online activities at the above website and discuss their findings on the discussion board. When responding to peers, course material should be integrated into the posts.
2. Reducing Reactivity to Diversity: http://wilderdom.com/games/MulticulturalExperientialActivities.html
This website has numerous games and activities designed to reduce reactivity to diversity from (PreK – adulthood). Have students explore the site and read a few of the activities. Then, have the students write a self-reflection journal.
- Which activities did you read about and why?
- What strategies were used to improve diversity appreciation?
- How do these activities relate to the information in chapter 14 on reducing reactivity and increasing appreciation?
3. The Positives and Negatives of Social Media
Chapter 14 discusses the pros and cons of living in an online world. Have students explore a social media site of their choice (e.g., Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, SnapChat, etc.). Ask them to identify examples of both positive interactions (e.g., social support) and negative interactions (e.g., narcissism or bullying). Have the students on the discussion board describe their findings and relate the material to chapter 14.
4. Pinterest Board
I use this assignment in all of my classes. First, create a Pinterest account if you do not already have one. Create a “class board” for each class in which you will be doing this assignment. The board must be made public. Then, using your roster, invite your students to be collaborators for the class board. Ask the students to “pin” an item or more (video, website, article, visual graphic, etc.) related to chapter one (no repeat pins). Then, have them comment on a few of their peers’ pins, relating the pin to the chapter’s material. If you want to see how successful this assignment can be, check out my class boards: https://www.pinterest.com/professorgrayso/
By viewing the pins and comments, you will be able to see how the students understood the course material. However, you could have them discuss the pins on a discussion board or write a journal about what they learned by viewing the pins and how the pins related to course material.
