Discussion Questions

1. In this course, we have learned many useful strategies for coping and adapting to change and challenges. Thinking of a current challenge in your life, what specific information from our course are you able to use to overcome the challenge? Thinking of possible challenges in the future, what specific information that you have learned throughout the course will you be able to utilize?

2. This chapter discussed agency and communion and the need to reconcile these two needs. Discuss how you balance your need for the advancement of self with your concern for the well-being of others. What can happen if either one or the other of these needs becomes the major focus of your life? How could such an imbalance hurt your well-being?

3. Living in a diverse society is wonderful and provides opportunities that more homogenous societies do not have. However, diversity is sometimes met with prejudice and an in-group/out-group mentality. Have you ever faced prejudice or the in-group/out-group mindset? Discuss how your college campus works to reduce reactivity to diversity and, instead, increase the student body’s appreciation of diversity (e.g., clubs, campus awareness days, workshops, etc.).

4. Discuss the digital divide. Have you seen the digital divide on your campus? How about in your community? How could the digital divide place a student at risk for academic struggles?

5. Discuss the pro’s and con’s of online dating. What are some of the risks of dating online? Would you ever consider dating online? Why or why not?

6. This chapter discusses both the positive and negative effects of today’s technologies. Do you feel that technology has more of a positive or negative impact on your personal and academic life? Discuss some examples for both.
