Chapter nine discusses how self-regulated learning is necessary for academic success.  The above website discusses some very specific activities that students can engage in to further develop their self-regulated learning.  Choose one of these activities to review the information in chapter nine.  When finished write a reflection as to what activity you chose and whether you felt like it helped you better learn the material by identifying areas that you needed to further study.

Visit the above website, create a free account, and take the academic self-regulation questionnaire.  When finished answer the following questions.

  1. Did you score as you expected on this questionnaire?
  2. Do you feel that the questionnaire adequately assessed your academic self-regulation?  Why or why not?
  3. How does this questionnaire relate to course material?

Visit the above website, create a free account, and take the intrinsic motivation inventory.  When finished, answer the following questions.

Chapter nine discusses some of the unique challenges first generation college students face.  Visit the above website.  First, explore the website and see what is available.  Next, choose one individual’s story to watch.  When finished, compare and contrast your college experience with the person in the video’s experience.

5. Pinterest Board

I use this assignment in all of my classes.  First, create a Pinterest account if you do not already have one.  Create a “class board” for each class in which you will be doing this assignment.  The board must be made public.  Then, using your roster, invite your students to be collaborators for the class board.  Ask the students to “pin” an item or more (video, website, article, visual graphic, etc.) related to chapter one (no repeat pins).  Then, have them comment on a few of their peers’ pins, relating the pin to the chapter’s material.  If you want to see how successful this assignment can be, check out my class boards:  https://www.pinterest.com/professorgrayso/

By viewing the pins and comments, you will be able to see how the students understood the course material.  However, you could have them discuss the pins on a discussion board or write a journal about what they learned by viewing the pins and how the pins related to course material.
