1. Career Investigation

Have students choose a career that they are interested in to research.  Using the Occupational Outlook Handbook for the BLS:  http://www.bls.gov/ooh/, answer the following questions.

  1. What career did you choose?
  2. Briefly describe this career.
  3. What is the projected growth rate for this career?
  4. What is the typical starting salary for this career?  Would you be able to live comfortably with this salary?
  5. Discuss aspects of the career that you like and dislike.

2. Career Clusters

Have students go to the following website and complete the career clusters inventory:  http://breitlinks.com/careers/career_pdfs/InterestSurvey.pdf .  Have the students write a self-reflection on how the inventory results relate to their future career aspirations.

3. Business Etiquette

Have students read the information at the following website regarding business etiquette:  http://breitlinks.com/careers/career_pdfs/bus_eti.pdf .  On the discussion board, encourage  students to discuss the etiquette rules.  What rules did they already know?  Which rules surprised them?

4. Career One Stop

Have students visit and explore the following website:  https://www.careeronestop.org/GetMyFuture/index.aspx?&frd=true .  Have the students discuss five things that they learned at this website.  How does this information relate to the material in chapter 10?

5. Pinterest Board

I use this assignment in all of my classes.  First, create a Pinterest account if you do not already have one.  Create a “class board” for each class in which you will be doing this assignment.  The board must be made public.  Then, using your roster, invite your students to be collaborators for the class board.  Ask the students to “pin” an item or more (video, website, article, visual graphic, etc.) related to chapter one (no repeat pins).  Then, have them comment on a few of their peers’ pins, relating the pin to the chapter’s material.  If you want to see how successful this assignment can be, check out my class boards:  https://www.pinterest.com/professorgrayso/

By viewing the pins and comments, you will be able to see how the students understood the course material.  However, you could have them discuss the pins on a discussion board or write a journal about what they learned by viewing the pins and how the pins related to course material.
