Web Exercises

1. The Nobel Prize organization hosts a website that explains research conducted by Nobel Prize winners.  Sometimes, they provide interactive activities that allow the research to be brought to life.  Pavlov’s research on classical conditioning is one of these interactive activities that is available: https://www.nobelprize.org/educational/medicine/pavlov/pavlov.html.  Visit this website and complete the activity.  When finished, post on the discussion board what you learned about classical conditioning and how it relates to the material in chapter four.

2. Play with Learning discusses how behavioral (http://playwithlearning.com/2012/01/06/behaviourism-and-games/), cognitive (http://playwithlearning.com/2012/01/11/cognitivism-and-games/), and contextual (http://playwithlearning.com/2012/02/08/social-learning-and-games/) principles can be used in educational and entertainment games.  Read the information at the links above.  When finished, answer the following questions.

  1. Think of a game that you have played.  What behavioral principles were used and how?
  2. Think of a game that you have played.  What cognitive principles were used and how?
  3. Think of a game that you have played.  What contextual principles were used and how?
  4. How does the information that you read at the websites relate to the material in chapter four?
  5. How could these principles be used in your everyday life when adjusting to change?

3. Active learning is discussed in chapter four.  Start by exploring the web for websites devoted to active learning.  Next, on the discussion board, explain how one of your previous classes could be transformed into an active learning environment.

4. Pinterest Board

I use this assignment in all of my classes.  First, create a Pinterest account if you do not already have one.  Create a “class board” for each class in which you will be doing this assignment.  The board must be made public.  Then, using your roster, invite your students to be collaborators for the class board.  Ask the students to “pin” an item or more (video, website, article, visual graphic, etc.) related to chapter one (no repeat pins).  Then, have them comment on a few of their peers’ pins, relating the pin to the chapter’s material.  If you want to see how successful this assignment can be, check out my class boards:  https://www.pinterest.com/professorgrayso/

By viewing the pins and comments, you will be able to see how the students understood the course material.  However, you could have them discuss the pins on a discussion board or write a journal about what they learned by viewing the pins and how the pins related to course material.
