1. Chapter three discusses Zimbardo’s and Milgram’s classic experiments.  The Social Psychology Network (https://www.socialpsychology.org/expts.htm) allows individuals to participate in web-based research by taking surveys by psychologists and psychology students.  Visit the website and choose a survey related to any topic in chapter three.  After completing the survey, answer the following questions.

  1. What survey did you complete?
  2. What led you to choose this survey?
  3. Did you feel that the questions adequately addressed the stated topic?
  4. Did any part of completing the survey surprise you?  If yes, what and why?
  5. How does this survey relate to material in chapter three?

2.  This chapter discusses the importance of social support for well-being.  Social media provides an increasingly important forum for giving and receiving social support.  Explore Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and other social media sites of interests and answer the below questions.

  1. List three examples of social support that you found on social media.  Explain what the support was and where you found it.
  2. How can you relate these examples to the information found in chapter three (e.g., what type of social support was provided)?
  3. What do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of online social support in comparison to face-to-face social support?

3.  Using an online search engine, research a traditionally collectivistic culture.  When finished, summarize the culture and explain how what you learned about the culture relates to the material in chapter three.

4. Pinterest Board

I use this assignment in all of my classes.  First, create a Pinterest account if you do not already have one.  Create a “class board” for each class in which you will be doing this assignment.  The board must be made public.  Then, using your roster, invite your students to be collaborators for the class board.  Ask the students to “pin” an item or more (video, website, article, visual graphic, etc.) related to chapter one (no repeat pins).  Then, have them comment on a few of their peers’ pins, relating the pin to the chapter’s material.  If you want to see how successful this assignment can be, check out my class boards:  https://www.pinterest.com/professorgrayso/

By viewing the pins and comments, you will be able to see how the students understood the course material.  However, you could have them discuss the pins on a discussion board or write a journal about what they learned by viewing the pins and how the pins related to course material.
