Politics of the Administrative Process
Data Exercises
For the data exercises in Chapter 8, you familiarized yourself with the data that are made available on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s FedScope site. There, you learned about the comprehensive federal human resources data that you can retrieve at http://www.fedscope.opm.gov/.
Once again, direct your web browser to FedScope. If you have not done so already, take several minutes to read the Data Definitions provided under the “data cube” section near the middle of the page. This background information will help you to inform you about the date that you are about to explore.
1. As you can see, data cubes are organized as follows:
- Employment
- Accessions
- Separations
- Employment Trend
- Diversity
For these exercises, you are going to explore the Accessions and Separations cubes. Briefly explain how these cubes relate.
2. Under the Accession cube, select the “FY 2011—FY 2016” trends. Under the Separations cube, select the data for the same period. Using data from both of these cubes, create a single table that reports accession and separations for each of the six years. The following table might be helpful.

3. In narrative form, describe the data that you collected. Be sure to include any noteworthy trends.
