Data Exercises

1. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) provides countless audits on its public website. Direct your browser to http://www.gao.gov/index.html and select a report in which you are especially interested. In about a page, provide a summary of the report for your colleague. (Hint: Focus on the executive summary section.)

2. What seems to be the origin of the report? Was this report created specifically for a member of Congress or does it seem to have been initiated by GAO itself?

3. Do you anticipate any tensions between the executive agency under review, Congress, and the White House—based on this report? Why or why not?

4. Based on your newfound expertise on the “politics of the administrative process” (also the title of your text), what are some key takeaways or observations that you can offer as a result of reading this report and connecting its findings or themes with key themes of the text? Be sure to make connections across the chapters.
