Data Exercises

This exercise builds on the data that you collected for the Chapter 4 data exercises. In case you did not complete those exercises, the beginning directions are repeated.

Using official government websites, locate four examples of both federal (select two) and state (select two) agency organizational charts (for a total of four charts). (For example, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ organizational chart is found here: http://www.hhs.gov/about/orgchart/. For an example for state government, see Washington State’s Department of Transportation organizational chart: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2016/08/08/WSDOTOrgChart_SEPTEMBER_2016.pdf. After you have found the four agencies of your choice, respond to the following questions:

1. For each of the four examples that you selected, identify whether the agencies are purpose organizations or clientele organizations. Why?

2. Within each of the organization charts, identify whether each sub office (or bureau, etc.) fulfills a staff or line activity. Justify your response with a brief explanation.

3. Discuss each of the four agencies in terms of span of control. What challenges might this pose to agency leaders? Be sure to include whether the nature of the organization’s work (e.g., purpose vs. clientele) seems to matter. Are there any major differences between federal and state organizations? Justify your response.

4. Based on what you have learned from the text, can you identify any potential interagency conflict (function vs. area) between the example agencies (compare state to state, federal to federal)? Why or why not?
