Exercise 1

Have students watch the video Juvenile Prisons (The Lost Children Behind Bars) at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8c1LahPSIA. Pick one offender and write an essay identifying specific characteristics that influenced their delinquent behaviors. Be sure to explore and document at least two social and physical characteristics and the response of the juvenile court system to the delinquency.

Exercise 2

There are many social and physical factors that may influence delinquency. Parenting style is one of the most relevant and telling factors. In order to better understand how styles of parenting may affect delinquency, visit the website of http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2708328/, which describes the results of a meta-analysis of different types of parenting on delinquency.

1. What types of parenting styles are examined in the research study?
    
2. How do the authors explain the link between these parenting styles and delinquency?
    
3. If particular types of parenting styles seem to be linked to delinquency, then why do so many children NOT participate in delinquent activity?
