The Communication Age: Connecting and Engaging
Second Edition
Learning Objectives
1. Identify the key features, advantages and disadvantages of small group communication
Small groups possess six key features that differentiate them from other communication contexts. There are also several advantages and disadvantages associated with group work. When joining a new group or beginning a new task with an existing group, you need to approach the experience in a positive way and refuse to let your prior group experiences interfere with your current group task.
2. List and define each of the five stages of group development
Not all groups will proceed through the forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning stages of group development at the same rate. In fact, the rate at which any of your groups move through these stages will depend, in part, on the life span of the group, the amount of time members will belong to the group, or whether members meet physically or virtually.
3. Distinguish between task roles and building and maintenance roles
Remember to always consider the group task before you select the appropriate task role or building and maintenance role to play. If the task is directed toward making progress toward the group goal, you should play a task role; if the task is focused on developing or maintaining relationships among group members, you should play a building and maintenance role.
4. Describe how group members can engage in shared leadership
Shared leadership is a behavior in which any group member can engage. Doing so allows you and your members to assume the leadership role when it is most likely needed by your group.
