Discussion Questions

  1. A variety of topics are able to incite excitement in communication. Together with the class, brainstorm some of those topics and the language used when discussing them.
  2. Choose a “hot” and timely topic that students will have some knowledge about (related to race, sexuality, religion, gender, or other issues), and discuss the way conversations around these topics have built, sustained, or challenged power and privilege.
  3. Think of a time when you heard someone use oppressive language (either directed at you or someone else). What do you think may be the possible effects of using this particular language?
