Chapter Activities

Activity 1: Ecomap

Provide students with examples of an ecomap. They should then create an ecomap of their own family and clearly define the impact of the environment on their family.

Activity 2: Temporary Assistance to Needy Families

Have students form groups of three to four and discuss Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. Each group should compile a list of pros and cons of the act since it was enacted.

When each group is finished with their list, they should meet with a nearby group and see if there are any discrepancies between their lists. Discuss.

Activity 3: Artificial Reproduction Discussion

Have students work in groups and discuss the following questions. Afterward, the whole class should regroup and compare responses.

1) How have the use of sperm donations and artificial reproductive technology changed the way that the law defines who is a part of a family?

2) What questions or concerns around family formation do these court cases grapple with?

3) What do you think about how California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio have resolved them?
