Summary: Based in a two-year staff development study, the author asserts that changes to include multicultural education should be pursued as a schoolwide approach.
Questions to Consider:
- What were the structural barriers teachers encountered as they attempted to enact multicultural education?
- Thinking about your own school (whether as a teacher or k-12 student), what are some of the structural barriers you anticipate encountering? Based upon insights gained from your readings from this and previous chapters, what are some suggestions you would make to the administration if given the opportunity? What changes can you make without administrative intervention?
Learning Objective: LO 12-2School Culture and Readiness for Change

Questions to Consider:
- In what ways does school leadership play a role in culturally responsive education?
- Why is cultural competence an important skill to have for school leaders who wish to be culturally responsive?
