Gender in the News

  1. After reading Chapter 8, you should have gained a more thorough understanding of gender differences in perceptions, experiences, and emotional expressivity. After reading the article www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/25/how-men-and-women-process_n_6510160.html, do you believe there is a difference in how men and women perceive emotions? Use examples from the article as well as the text to justify your answer. Explain possible gender differences in understanding emotions as a feeling or as an expression--would you say that stereotypical gender roles play a role in this difference? Why or why not? Offer examples in your response.
  2. Our perception of gender via language use and conventions is subtle, yet pervasive, as you should have learned from reading Chapter 8. Read the article www.abc.net.au/news/2016-05-27/fidge-even-your-language-submits-to-gender-stereotypes/7451192 and explain how different language conventions most often used by men and women can serve to reinforce gender stereotypes. The article specifically examines fictional examples of gendered language on social media. Which aspects of the differences in language by men and women stand out to you and why? Even though the comments are not from real people, which statements do you consider to be more “masculine” or “feminine” and why? Be sure to use examples from the text as well as an explanation regarding how the social construction of gender and societal expectations of gender roles carry over into language.
  3. Chapter 8 takes an in-depth look at how men and women communicate. For example, there is an ever-present stereotype that women talk more than men do and the content of what women have to say is relatively unimportant. The article http://time.com/money/4450406/men-interrupt-talk-more/ states that women actually talk less than men while at work--do you think this is true? Why or why not? Is this assumption limited to an occupational setting? Use examples from the text and the article in your response.
