  1. When you think of a married woman in the 1950s, what comes to mind? Now, think of a married woman in 2017. Are there any differences between the two women you imagined? You might conclude that a lot has changed since the 1950s; however, very little has actually changed with respect to expectations regarding the household division of labor. Read www.cnn.com/2015/11/04/health/work-life-balance-gender-divide-pew-research-center/index.html. Do you think motherhood has an impact on a woman’s professional career? What about fatherhood for a man’s career? Use evidence from the text and article in your answer. Describe any shifts in actual workload in and outside the home for both men and women.
  2. After reading this chapter, you should have a better understanding of the wage gap between men and women. What do the terms “glass ceiling,” “sticky floor,” and “maternal wall” mean? Read the article http://money.cnn.com/2017/04/04/pf/equal-pay-day-gender-pay-gap/index.html and offer an explanation, in your own words, of the real-world implications of the gender pay gap. Include a discussion of intersectionality and gender bias.
