Gender in the News

Click on the following links. Please note these will open in a new window.

  1. Chapter 13 reveals gender differences in the prevalence mental health diagnoses, specifically touching on differences in internalizing and externalizing disorders. Define and describe internalizing and externalizing disorders. Why do you think more women are diagnosed with internalizing disorders? Why do you believe men are more likely to be diagnosed with externalizing disorders? In your response, refer to content from the following article www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/08/110818101733.htm. Do you think internalized gender roles play a part in help-seeking behavior for men or women? Why or why not? Is there a biological component? Use your knowledge from the text to complete this question.
  2. You learned in Chapter 13 that people from stigmatized groups have a “heightened risk” of mental illness. Read the following article www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/may/12/lgbt-mental-health-sexuality-gender-identity and define the phrases “internalized homophobia” and “internalized transphobia.” Discuss how these internalizations might be harmful to a person’s mental health. How might these internalizations affect decisions to seek help? How are these fears different for members of the LGBTQIA+ community versus cisgendered individuals? Use examples from the article and the text to support your answer.
  3. Define objectification theory in your own words. Why are women much more likely to be diagnosed with an eating disorder then men, and why are eating disorders (specifically anorexia and bulimia nervosa) more common in the Western world? Does sexual orientation affect the likelihood of developing an eating or body image disorder? After reading the following article www.cnn.com/2013/09/05/health/male-eating-disorders-cuban/index.html, explain why the man suffering from bulimia nervosa might have had difficulty seeking help (e.g., gender role ideologies). Discuss the stigma of help-seeking behavior as “feminine.” Use examples from the article and text to complete this question.
