  1. This chapter discusses sexism in the workplace--after visiting www.cnn.com/2013/09/05/health/male-eating-disorders-cuban/index.html, do you agree that women face different challenges than men in the working world? Why or why not? Think of the differing experiences of men and women in everyday life, and in an occupational setting. The article provided lists real-life examples of women facing sexism and discrimination in the workplace. Using examples from the article and also from the text, explain why you do or do not believe the United States to be a patriarchal society.
  2. After reading Chapter 6, you learned that sexist attitudes held by both women and men have real-life repercussions and consequences. By looking at www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/women-politics-sexism_us_5a01f704e4b06ff32c93d286, would you say that women in politics are restricted by gender norms and expectations? Why or why not? In what ways do women and men reinforce ideologies that prevent women from pursuing a career in politics? How are these ideas relevant in daily life? Use examples from the text and the article to justify your answer.
  3. Chapter 6 provides an in-depth description of sexism in its different forms. Read the following article www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/women-arent-special-the-insidious-nature-of-benevolent_us_592e005fe4b075342b52c12b. Is the idea that women are “special” and different from men (e.g., more nurturing and caring) chivalrous or is it a form of benevolent sexism? Justify your answer with examples. How have societal expectations of gender performance had an impact on this idea? In your answer, be sure to define benevolent sexism and explain how it is different from hostile sexism.
