1. In what ways does the United States’ multicultural population affect the practice of clinical psychology? Identify several cultural groups and compare and contrast clinical practices with each group. Are these practices the same, or do they vary?

2. The APA requires accredited clinical psychology doctoral programs to incorporate cultural competency training into their curricula. In what formats do you think such training would be most effective or beneficial (i.e., a multicultural course, interaction with clients from various cultural backgrounds, etc.)? Which format or formats would you personally prefer?

3. Current trends in multiculturalism tend to take an emic perspective, focusing on the differences among individuals of varying backgrounds. What are some possible disadvantages of focusing on the emic while marginalizing the etic, the similarities between all individuals? How might such an approach affect the quality and effectiveness of treatment?

4. Have you ever had a course or formal training on the topic of cultural diversity? If so, what topics did your course or training include? Were there any elements that were not covered that you think should be included in such a course? If you were designing a formal course on cultural diversity, what elements would you include? Think about texts, readings, and experiential activities.

5. Have you ever been asked to represent the viewpoint of a group with which you identify? Have you ever experience people assuming you felt or behaved a certain way because they assume your membership or affiliation with an identity? If that happened within the context of a counseling relationship, how might it affect your trust in the counselor?
