Study Questions

  1. Describe theories of attachment and the different types of attachment styles.  How might problematic attachment patterns increase the risk of a child developing internalizing or externalizing behavioral problems? Identify an unhealthy attachment style.   In terms of interpersonal relationships, how might this child with unhealthy attachment style behave and interact with teacher and peers in grade school? How might these problematic behavior problems be interpersonally expressed during adolescence?

  2. Take on the role of a psychologist. Imagine that your newest client is a young boy diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and his mother has come to your office seeking advice on how she can be involved in the treatment of the disorder. Explain to her the different types of available treatments for Autism, providing specific examples of behaviors she should engage in with her son.

  3. Given Autism Spectrum Disorders - ASD is a developmental and lifelong condition and is considered a Disability in many school districts, describe the educational rights of parents and their child with ASD in the school setting. How might you collaboratively work with school staff regarding treatment and intervention?  In what ways will you help to inform the parents regarding the course of ASD and the available services needed for transitioning into adulthood, college, and community life?

  4. Compare and contrast, ADHD, CD, ODD.  How might many of the symptoms of these 3 disorders be better accounted for symptoms associated with pediatric bipolar disorder?
