Study Questions

  1. Suppose you have just discovered that several of your close college friends are abusing amphetamines. While you have expressed your concerns to them, they have shared that they are academically doing excellent and are able to manage a grueling academic program because of the amphetamines. What drug effects are your friends looking for with amphetamines? Describe the long-term health consequences of amphetamine, as well as resulting brain and neurocognitive changes.

  2. It is not uncommon for people with alcohol and drug abuse issues to have additional challenges and diagnoses.  Describe diagnoses and experiences that may place people at risk in developing alcohol and drug abuse issues. Explain, how it that individual are self-medicating with alcohol and drugs for these diagnoses and experiences.  Develop a treatment plan that helps to address these substance-related disorders, while increasing adaptive coping resources.

  3. Compare and contrast gambling and technology use as addictive disorders.  What commonalities may they have in terms of addiction and possible treatments? Discuss how addictions with technology may be more challenging to treat.
