2. Incorporating Sexual History Into the Social Work Assessment

Go to this toolkit for taking a sexual health history, and choose one topic to look at in depth. Create a scenario in which you are the intake social worker in an agency that requires a sexual health history as part of the initial assessment. Write a paragraph about this scenario; then, list the explicit questions you will include in the assessment interview. Also, write two or three sentences of the wording you will use to introduce this part of the interview.

3. Social Work With Women Who Are or Were Incarcerated

Read this chapter by Stephanie Covington that applies relational theory to understanding the psychological development and needs of girls and women involved with the criminal justice system. Create a scenario in which you are the social worker for a family to which the mother has just returned after completing her sentence for drug possession. What will your focus be in assessing the needs of the mother and the family?

4. Social Work With Young Adults Considering or Entering the Military

Find information online about the branches of the military, who is eligible to join, and what educational and job training opportunities are offered.

  • Note what is attractive to young adults about joining one of the branches of military services.
  • Reflect on your own feelings about this choice. Would your tendency be to have a neutral, positive, or discouraging attitude?
  • Go beyond your own reactions to make a list of questions a young adult should ask before making the decision to apply to or join a branch of the military.
  • Also, make a list of questions and areas to explore with a young person in the service and with their family members about what the experience involves and how it is going for them.
