2. Common Core Controversy

This website explains and promotes the most recent national effort to create appropriate educational standards for public schools. Find basic information about how the standards were developed, what they cover, and how they have been evaluated where they have been implemented. Then, find another online source that criticizes the Common Core initiative and/or discusses the controversy about it. Have a discussion in class about the controversy and its relevance for social workers.

3. Preventing Bullying

This site contains information about a specific antibullying program that is supported by research. Identify the definition of bullying that is being used and the theory drawn on in designing the prevention program.

  • Write a two-paragraph summary of the Olweus antibullying approach, and comment on your own observation of attempts to stop or reduce bullying.
  • Bring this to class for a discussion, and submit it to your instructor.
  • In class, hold a discussion about the Olweus program and how effective students think it would be in their community.
