Discussion Questions

  1. How do you think Goffman’s theory of impression management applies to online interactions? How is it easier or more difficult to manage your impression online? Why might some people opt to intentionally deceive others? Do you believe it is easier or more challenging to conceal your true identity online than in face-to-face interactions? Why?

  2. For a role of your choosing (student, doctor, police officer, spouse, etc.), create a list of frontstage and backstage performances that might occur in a typical situation that the person would encounter. Also consider how you might act in the classroom versus how you might act in the school quad or another social meeting place on campus.

  3. Which of the agents of socialization discussed in this chapter do you believe had the most influence on your socialization? Why? What is the role of your culture, heritage, and background in your socialization process?
