Most people think that racism exists in the hearts and minds of human beings—that racism is something one has, or is arguably infected with. Sociologists argue, however, that racism is built into the institutional framework of our society. What are some examples of institutional racism that you are aware of? Which is most limiting to the intended target of the oppression: individual or institutional racism?

Explain how stereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination. Is discrimination always inevitable when stereotype and prejudice exist? Why, or why not? Give examples.
