Chapter 14: America and Russia   
 

  1. To identify and explain the sources and historical evolution of U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union, especially during the Cold War.
  2. To explain and assess America’s effort to “reset” U.S.-Russian relations, the deterioration in relations after the Cold War after a brief era of cooperation following the ascension of Vladimir Putin as Russian president, NATO expansion and intervention in the Balkans and elsewhere, and Russian involvement in Ukraine.
  3. To detect and assess the impact of the key values and interests that shape U.S. policy toward Russia.
  4. To identify and assess the alternative U.S. foreign policy options of dealing with Russia over issues including Syria and Iran, U.S. missile defense in Europe, Ukraine, and Russian human rights abuses.
