Chapter 11: America and Radical Islam
- To identify and explain the Islamic past, the meaning of jihadism, the origins of radical Islam, and the sources of U.S. policy toward Islamic extremism.
- To identify and explain the evolution of America’s War on Terror including involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, the threats posed by al-Qaeda, and the emergence of regional terrorist groups in the Middle East (especially ISIS), Africa, Asia, and radicalized individual “lone wolves,” and U.S. government reorganization to increase homeland security.
- To detect and assess the impact of the key values and interests that shape U.S. policy toward Islamic extremism.
- To identify and assess the alternative foreign policy options toward Afghanistan and Pakistan, al-Qaeda and other Muslim jihadists, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, and “lone wolves.”
