Chapter 11: America and Radical Islam
 

  1. To identify and explain the Islamic past, the meaning of jihadism, the origins of radical Islam, and the sources of U.S. policy toward Islamic extremism.
  2. To identify and explain the evolution of America’s War on Terror including involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, the threats posed by al-Qaeda, and the emergence of regional terrorist groups in the Middle East (especially ISIS), Africa, Asia, and radicalized individual “lone wolves,” and U.S. government reorganization to increase homeland security.
  3. To detect and assess the impact of the key values and interests that shape U.S. policy toward Islamic extremism.
  4. To identify and assess the alternative foreign policy options toward Afghanistan and Pakistan, al-Qaeda and other Muslim jihadists, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, and “lone wolves.”
