Learning Objectives

In this chapter you will learn

• How the brain and the rest of the body participate in emotion
• How stress affects health and immune functioning
• Why pain is an emotion as well as a sensation
• The role of hormones, brain structures, and heredity in aggression

Chapter 8 begins with two major theories of emotion, and examines the contributions of cognition and physiological feedback in the identification of emotions. Following that, the role of neural structures is considered, with emphasis on the limbic system, amygdala, prefrontal cortex, cingulate cortex, and right hemisphere. Next, the effect of stress as both a positive and negative influence on health is discussed, including the social, personality, and genetics interact with stress. A new In The News segment discusses how odd work schedules can adversely affect health. The concept of pain as an emotion is also addressed in terms of the neural distinction between pain sensation and pain emotion. The chapter concludes with an analysis of the influence of hormones, brain structures, neurotransmitters, heredity, and environmental variables on various types of aggression. Novelty seeking and the aftermath of 9/11 are also discussed in Application and In the News segments.
