Discussion Questions

  1. Imagine that parents asked you whether their child’s picky eating was a normal phase or whether it was a disorder. What questions would you ask to determine whether the child had Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder?

  2. Childhood obesity is not a DSM diagnosis. Should it be? List similarities and differences between obesity and Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. Why do you think that these are in the DSM and not obesity?

  3. Cross-cultural research suggests that Bulimia Nervosa (BN), but not Anorexia Nervosa (AN), may be a culture-bound syndrome. That is, AN is found all over the world, but BN is not. Why might this be? Generally, culture-bound syndromes tell us something about the culture in which they are found. What do you think that BN tells us about our culture?

  4. One of the most concerning things about AN and BN is that there is a culture—largely online—that seeks to normalize these disorders and view them as lifestyle choices. Teens with these disorders seek out these communities for affirmation. What, if anything, should be done to counteract this?

  5. There seems to be a growing consensus that ultra-thin media images are not healthy for young viewers. If this is true, why is it so difficult to change what is presented in the media?
