8-1: Describe the unique aspects of police subculture.
- Practicum: In groups of 3-5, outline 5-7 strategies that might rebuild the public trust of the police. Present to the class.
- Writing: Imagine you have been a police officer for about one year. In 800-1000 words, reflect on the benefits and challenges of the police subculture and how it is affecting you personally and professionally.
8-2: Analyze the factors that contribute to police subculture.
- Role-playing: In groups of 3-5, portray at least three scenarios that demonstrate police subculture and factors that contribute to it.
- Writing: In 800-1000 words, discuss factors that contribute to police subculture. Provide examples as well as the pros and cons of these factors.
8-3: Identify the sources of police stress.
- Role-playing: In groups of 3-5, enact at least three scenarios that portray the various types of stresses in police work. Include reactions from officers, and healthy and unhelpful ways of dealing with the stress.
- Writing: Imagine you are a veteran officer preparing to train new officers. How will you describe your experiences of stress with the job, and suggestions to them for preparing and dealing with stress? Discuss in 1000-1200 words.
8-4: Discuss the effects and consequences of police stress.
- Documentation: In groups of 3-5, document the potential consequences of stress, ways to detect signs of these consequences, and ways to address these consequences. Present to the class.
- Writing: Stress can have a significant impact on the physical and emotional health of police officers. In 800-1000 words, reflect on how factors of stress and consequences of stress can create a harmful cycle.
8-5: Assess the influence of police shootings and critical incidents on officers.
- Documentation: In groups of 3-5, outline 5 recent critical incidents you have heard of. Imagine and discuss how these incidents likely affected the officers who responded.
- Writing: Given that the possibility of critical incidents and life threatening situations are daily reality for officers, how can the police subculture, administrators, and officers themselves address anticipatory stress and posttraumatic stress disorder? Discuss in 500-800 words.
8-6: Evaluate the various strategies that both organizations and individual officers can implement to mitigate the negative effects of job-related stress.
- Practicum: In groups of 4-6, design a 10 minute training program that prepares officers to recognize the signs of stress and implement coping mechanisms.
- Writing: How can stress-reducing strategies be incorporated within training and daily routines of officers? Discuss in 500-800 words.
