Chapter Activities

These lively and stimulating ideas for use in and out of class reinforce active learning. The activities apply to individual or group projects.

10-1:  Define police discretion and the factors that influence it.

  1. Role-playing:  In groups of 4-6, enact 3-5 scenarios of police exercising discretion. Include examples of appropriate and inappropriate discretion, and factors influencing their use of discretion.
  2. Writing:  In 500-800 words, discuss the importance of discretion, and challenges of discretion.

10-2:  Assess factors that can affect the use of discretion by police.

  1. Documentation:  In groups of 3-5, outline factors that influence police discretion.
  2. Writing:  Imagine you are an officer with one year experience. In 800-1000 worsd, reflect on a time in which the situation, setting, and suspect influenced your discretion.

10-3:  Define the term ethics and discuss its importance in the field of policing.

  1. Practicum:  In groups of 3-5, outline 5 activities focused on ethics that could be incorporated in standard police training.
  2. Writing:  In 800-1000 words, analyze how ethical policing is critical for community-police relationships and, thus, for public safety. Include relevant examples.

10-4:  Identify and describe various organizational strategies that can be used to mitigate unethical police conduct.

  1. Practicum:  In groups of 4-6, create a code of ethical conduct with 10 points designed to guide ethical police discretion.
  2. Writing:  Imagine you are a police administrator who has recently had to deal publicly with unethical issues by a handful of your officers. How does this affect your department, relationship with the community? What actions will you take to handle these discrepancies and promote ethical behavior within your department? Reflect in 1000-1200 words.
