Chapter 6: Causation and Research Design

1. Explain the difference between qualitative (idiographic) and quantitative (nomothetic) causal explanations.
2. Describe the three criteria necessary for determining nomothetic causation and the two other criteria that are important but not required.
3. Explain why a true experimental design is the best method to use if you want to determine causation.
4. Describe the difference between cross-sectional and longitudinal designs and provide examples of three different types of longitudinal designs.
5. Define the individual and group units of analysis and explain the role they play in the ecological and reductionist fallacies.
