Is there an association between life satisfaction and gender? Let’s use the MIDUS2011 to explore this question.
SPSS
- To answer this question, we will need to run a crosstab like we did in Chapter 2 SPSS exercises. However, this time we will be examining the χ2 value as well.
- Click on Analyze/Descriptive Statistics/Crosstabs.
- Highlight RA1SR1 and click on the arrow so that it moves into the Rows box
- Highlight RA1PRSEX (gender) and click on the arrow to move it into the Columns box.
- Click on Cells, click off Counts-Observed, and click on Percentages-Column.
- Click Statistics and check Chi-square
- Click Continue and then OK.
- Interpret both the χ2 and p values. Is there an association between life satisfaction and gender?
Online Analysis
- To answer this question, we will need to run a crosstab like we did in Chapter 2 SPSS exercises. However, this time we will be examining the χ2 value as well.
- At the top of the page, click on Analysis > Run frequencies or crosstabulations.
- Type RA1SR1 into the row box, and RA1PRSEX (gender) into the box labeled column
- Be sure the box labeled “summary statistics” is checked
- Under CHART OPTIONS, select “no chart” and check the “show means” box.
- Click “run the table.”
- Interpret both the χ2 and p values. Is there an association between life satisfaction and gender?
