Learning Objectives

  1. To grasp the reasons that the corrections system must be held accountable and some of the obstacles to realizing that goal.
  2. To be able to list and describe the main mechanisms for holding corrections accountable.
  3. To understand the dilemma involved in establishing standards and accrediting institutions.
  4. To gain insight into how the courts work relative to corrections reforms and prisoner rights.
  5. To be able to discuss some of the major relevant issues that have come before the courts.
  6. To be able to list and describe some of the major pieces of federal legislation that pertain to prisoners or individuals under community supervision in the past several decades.
