Applying the Sociological Imagination
The television program Modern Family depicts a diversity of intimate relationships and family structures. Nontraditional family structures have become increasingly prevalent in the United States. For this exercise, choose two other currently popular television (or Internet) shows and describe how they portray the types of relationships discussed in this chapter. What are the differences between the two shows in how they portray familial relationships? Despite the differences, what similarities do the familial relationships have? What structural factors related to the shows (e.g., network, time of day aired, target audience, television or Internet) could lead to the differences that you noted?
