Discussion Questions

1. Consider each of the three models of training in Clinical Psychology (Boulder model, Vail model, and Clinical-Scientist model) and (a) identify which is the best fit for you and (b) identify which you would prefer to be the training program for a clinician you would like to work with in therapy.

2. Imagine that you are an administrator at a university considering new programs, and you are charged with evaluating whether the new program should offer a PsyD or a PhD. Consider the strengths and limitations of moving either direction.

3. Take a moment to quietly consider you classmates in this course. Whom amongst them would you like to train as a graduate student, if you were a faculty member in a doctoral program? What qualities do you admire in that person? What strengths would you like to emulate? How would they contribute to the climate in the program? For example, do they seem to manage stress effectively? Are they open-minded? Do they listen well in class discussions?

4. Please refer to Box 1.2, and consider that last question: What are your long-term career goals? Use the new understandings you have gleaned from this chapter to refine the answer you may have given before you began this course.
