1. The Center for Middletown Studies

To learn more about Middletown, visit the Center for Middletown Studies. The Center has produced a variety of research on Muncie, Indiana, that provides recent analyses that build on the Lynds’ famous studies. For example, recent research has looked at the Jewish and black communities. Another project, entitled “Documenting Deindustrialization” focuses on occupational change and the changing role of organized labor in Muncie. Explore their website to find some ways that Muncie has changed since the Lynds’ original studies.

2. Downsizing and Outsourcing

Visit a website of a major news media (e.g. www.newyorktimes.com or www.washingtonpost.com) or a media search engine (access LexisNexis Academic through your school's library). Search recent articles on downsizing and/or outsourcing. You may want to experiment with different search terms (e.g. “downsizing jobs” or “outsourcing US jobs”). Scan through some of the articles in your search. What companies, industries, or types of jobs were lost? Who benefited from the downsizing or outsourcing? Who lost from the downsizing or outsourcing? What happened to the people who lost their jobs?

3. Gender and the Labor Force

The Institute for Women’s Policy Research provides a wealth of current information on many subjects, but in particular on women and the economy. “Hot Topics” helps you find up-to-date information including resources and the latest reports.
